FSIC urges use of correct hand hygiene techniques

A worryingly large number of influenza outbreaks has been recorded recently across New Zealand and Australia, prompting the launching of a hand washing campaign by the Food Safety Information Council (FSIC), according to a recent report on the Scimex (Science Media Exchange) website.

The catalyst was Global Handwashing Day which occurred on 15th October.

The article emphasised the importance of effective hand washing – using correct methods for at least 20 seconds – stating

“Correct hand washing technique has been proven to reduce the risk of viral transmission and person-to-person sharing of food borne disease.”

The article quotes Rachelle Williams FSIC Chair as saying hand washing can not only reduce the 4.1 million cases of food poisoning in Australia each year it can also protect us from viruses such as the flu.”

The campaign has made two posters available (one each for adults and children) which the FSIC would like to be displayed everywhere that hand washing should take place, such as kitchens and bathrooms in the workplace, schools and households.

Three essential hand washing tips

The Voxy website in New Zealand has also covered the campaign, giving prominence to its three tips on how and when to wash hands correctly.
