The risk to co-workers’ health caused by a lack of hand washing

Handwashing in the workplace

Germs are spread so easily in the workplace…

A recent YouGov survey has revealed the horrifying fact that “One in six men aren’t washing their hands after having a poo at work” according to a recent report on the Metro website.

Reporter Faima Bakar sets the scene well, showing how quickly a person with contaminated hands can spread a serious illness around the workplace by shaking hands, or collecting up coffee mugs for a round of drinks.

Such an inconsiderate person, she writes, is not being friendly or helpful, but rather is

“…contaminating everyone’s hands and mugs with your own poo-infested hands.”

Men are the worst culprits for not washing hands

The YouGov survey referred to – One in six male workers say they don’t always wash their hands after having a poo at work – has some good news in that “most” workers surveyed do employ effective hand washing techniques after going to the toilet. Problems will of course arise if only one person in an office neglects this most important of tasks.

Or as the survey report so eloquently puts it,

“The results of a new YouGov Omnibus survey will make you want to avoid shaking hands for the rest of your life.”
