Global Handwashing Day: soap and water best for effective hand hygiene

Hand hygiene celebrating Global Handwashing Day

Important for removing harmful germs you may carry on your hands

Described as “the dirty truth”, it has been revealed that many people are guilty of not washing their hands as often as they should – and of those that do, many do not wash them properly according to a recent report on the University of Florida website.

The article, by Samantha Grenrock should not really come as a great surprise to those who have observed many instances of a woeful lack of effective hand hygiene, the consequences of which should be immediately apparent to anyone.

Ms Grenrock quotes professor of food science and human nutrition at the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Keith Schneider as saying “If more people washed their hands, fewer people would get sick”.

Professor Schneider suggested that the fact that Global Handwashing Day 2018 is upon us, should help people focus on what they can do in order to help prevent the spread of infection.

The importance of water AND soap

It is vital to use both soap and water for washing Professor Schneider is quoted as saying.

“Soap can help remove any fats or oils that are on your hands. These oils and fats can protect microbes from being washed away — think about how oil and water don’t mix. Soap breaks up fats and oils and lets them wash off your hands, taking the microbes with it.”
