World Hand Hygiene Day 5 May 2022
Hand washing has been at the forefront of public consciousness as the result of the ongoing pandemic, with communities worldwide having stepped up their hygiene efforts.
World Hand Hygiene Day 2022 this year takes place on 5th May: this year’s theme is “Unite for safety: clean your hands”.
As the campaign states,
“When a health facility’s ‘quality and safety climate or culture’ values hand hygiene and infection prevention and control (IPC), this results in both patients and health workers feeling protected and cared for.”
“This year’s theme for World Hand Hygiene Day, 5 May 2022, is focused on recognizing that we can add to a facility’s climate or culture of safety and quality through cleaning our hands but also that a strong quality and safety culture will encourage people to clean hands at the right times and with the right products.”
Placing mobile handwash units at the point of care
The World Health Organization‘s guidance Hand Hygiene Self-Assessment Framework 2010 Introduction and user instructions is a key designated resource for this year’s World Hand Hygiene Day.
The results of using the Framework “can be used to facilitate development of an action plan for the facility’s hand hygiene promotion programme”.
Delivering effective soap and water hand washing is a key contributor to hand hygiene compliance – and providing it where it can be most effective is equally important.
Note 3 Point of care under Section 1 System Change defines it as
“The place where three elements come together: the patient, the health-care worker, and care or treatment involving contact with the patient or his/ her surroundings (within the patient zone). Point-of-care products should be accessible without having to leave the patient zone (ideally within arms reach of the health-care worker or within 2 meters).”
