Handwashing focus renewed in construction sector

The need to make building sites COVID-secure

Effective hand hygiene within the construction sector is something that tended to be viewed more as a “nice to have” thing in the past. But being able to wash hands well at key times, such as before eating and after touching potentially contaminated surfaces were often overlooked.

On-site toilets usually, but not always, were paired with a hand washing basin which sadly wasn’t utilised as well as it could have been.

All that, in these COVID centric days, has of course changed.

Being able to wash with soap and water – the only cleansing method that is suitable in the event of dirty or soiled hands – is essential: gels won’t suffice. See Hand washing with soap and water “to best protect yourself from catching coronavirus”

Hand washing on construction sites

A recent article on the Somerset Live website detailed measure taken to keep house builder’s construction sites in the region – in particular with regard to keeping them COVID-secure.

Unsurprisingly, hand washing is considered to be of the very highest priority at the moment wrote Daniel Mumby, who gave some specific examples in the article.

Persimmon Homes advocate “Practice good hygiene, such as washing hands regularly, and avoid touching surfaces or sharing tools and equipment.”

Similarly, Taylor Wimpey‘s stated protocols “…include perspex screens in sales offices, social distancing, regular hand-washing and staggered sign-in times for construction workers.”
