Soap and water washing preferred to gels in Government guidance

Places of worship are vital for bringing communities and generations together – but the fact that people gather together, sometimes in quite large numbers, makes them “vulnerable” to the spread of coronavirus, according to recent Government guidance.

First and foremost, the guidance emphasises the critical importance of effective hand washing – which much take place both on entering and leaving the building. And the preferred method is by using soap and running water, with gels only as a last resort.

“On entering and leaving a place of worship, everyone, including staff, should be asked to wash their hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds using soap and water, or to use hand sanitiser if hand washing facilities are not available.”

Take particular care of children

The guidance recognises that young people need to be protected by effective hand hygiene measures, requiring that they should be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times, with the exception of specialist organised activities.

“They should wash hands thoroughly for 20 seconds with running water and soap and dry them thoroughly or use hand sanitiser ensuring that all parts of the hands are covered.”

Hands should also be thoroughly washed before any consumables are ingested states the regulations.
