Norovirus alerts around the UK – why you should wash with soap and water

Washing hands with soap and water not gels

Infection control centres around effective hand hygiene

The warning that “Only hand-washing will prevent spread of norovirus – alcohol hand gels DON’T kill the virus” was recently provided on the Heart website in an article calledHow to stop spreading norovirus this Christmas.

The report warns of the consequences of the highly contagious “winter vomiting virus” being introduced – albeit unintentionally into hospitals and care homes by visitors.

“…it can cause chaos, leading to ward closures and making it difficult for health-care workers to treat vulnerable patients at the busiest time of the year.”

In a Public Health England video (below) Dominic Mellon, a consultant in health protection states the great importance of effective hand washing – and when it comes to norovirus, he suggests, hand gels are ineffective.

“It’s important to use soap and water because norovirus isn’t killed off by antibacterial alcohol hand gels.”
