Most people don’t wash hands correctly – if they wash at all!

How to wash your hands effectively with a mobile sink

Half a minute is all it takes for an effective hand wash

Many people are not using correct hand washing techniques, using soap, or even washing at all – according to a recent report on the Metro website.

The article, by Adam Smith, quotes Professor Val Curtis from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who expressed concern that many people don’t even know how to wash their hand properly.

Professor Curtis has recently been studying the hand hygiene habits of thousands of people at a motorway service station. The results were a real cause for concern, with only 32 percent of men and 64 per cent of women washing after going to the toilet, says the article.

“The hygiene levels of people tested was shocking. We need to embarrass and shame people into washing their hands.”

“Handwashing is thought to be effective for the prevention of transmission of diarrhoea pathogens” Professor Curtis is reported as saying.
