“Hand hygiene is not a luxury”

World Hand Hygiene Day 2024

“Each year the SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign aims to progress the goal of maintaining a global profile on the importance of hand hygiene in health care and to ‘bring people together’ in support of hand hygiene improvement globally” begins the World Hand Hygiene Day SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands website.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling upon the worldwide health community to “be inspired” to enable universal health coverage – also referred to as UHC.

“Hand hygiene saves millions of lives every year when performed at the right times in health care.”

World Hand Hygiene Day also also “strongly supports” the Water, sanitation, hygiene and health (WASH) and Global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) agendas.

There are a number of useful resources that will help healthcare facilities to help spread the message of World Hand Hygiene Day 2024.

The Annual 5 May Advocacy Toolkit emphasises that effective hand hygiene is relevant for ALL members of the healthcare facility community – be they staff, patients or visitors.

Some of the statistics quoted in it are quite sobering…

“Approximately 70% of health care workers and 50% of surgical teams do not routinely practice hand hygiene.”

  4. Clean your hands after touching a patient and her/his immediate surroundings, when leaving the patient’s side.
