Video: placing handwashing facilities where they’re needed is “equally important” to handwashing

Point-of-care products should be accessible without having to leave the patient zone”

World Hand Hygiene Day 2022 this year took place on 5th May.

“This year’s theme for World Hand Hygiene Day, 5 May 2022, is focused on recognizing that we can add to a facility’s climate or culture of safety and quality through cleaning our hands but also that a strong quality and safety culture will encourage people to clean hands at the right times and with the right products.”

The World Health Organization‘s guidance Hand Hygiene Self-Assessment Framework 2010 Introduction and user instructions was a key designated resource for this year’s World Hand Hygiene Day.

The results of using the Framework “can be used to facilitate development of an action plan for the facility’s hand hygiene promotion programme”.

Delivering effective soap and water hand washing is a key contributor to hand hygiene compliance – and providing it where it can be most effective is equally important.

Note 3 Point of care under Section 1 System Change defines it as

“The place where three elements come together: the patient, the health-care worker, and care or treatment involving contact with the patient or his/ her surroundings (within the patient zone). Point-of-care products should be accessible without having to leave the patient zone (ideally within arms reach of the health-care worker or within 2 meters).”
