Hand sanitiser won’t protect anyone from norovirus says report

Winter last year was punctuated by social distancing, mask wearing and working from home. Now, many “traditional” winter illnesses such as flu, colds and noroviruses are already on a rapidly rising trajectory, according to a recent report on The Sun website

A reliance on hand gels or sanitisers is entirely misplaced when it comes to controlling norovirus – also know as “the winter vomiting bug”, wrote Ellie Cambridge.

For a very simple reason – gels don’t work against it!

“Washing your hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of norovirus” says the article – with the all important proviso that “warm water and soap, and a thorough scrub for at least 20 seconds, is the best way to ward off the nasty bug.”

Dr Lesley Larkin from the UK’s Health Security Agency Gastrointestinal Pathogens Unit warns that the illness is currently spreading across all age groups. Dr Larkin also offers clear hand washing advice.

“As with Covid-19, handwashing is really important to help stop the spread of this bug, but remember, unlike for Covid-19 alcohol gels do not kill off norovirus so soap and warm water is best.”

Soap and running water washing

Put simply, good “old-fashioned” hand hygiene methods – carried out effectively – are the only sure-fire way to control this extremely unpleasant illnesses.

“Washing your hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of norovirus.”

So in summary, it’s very important that everyone should wash their hands regularly – and well – this autumn!
