Containing the spread of coronavirus with effective hand hygiene

The Department of Health and Social Care recently issued an update Public information campaign focuses on handwashing as a result of coronavirus seemingly gaining a foothold in the UK.

The focus is self-explanatory. Handwashing is key, but it needs to be undertaken properly in order for it to be effective.

“You should wash your hands for 20 seconds.”

With this in mind, the BBC has now produced an instructional video Coronavirus: How to wash your hands – in 20 seconds.

The tutorial features Dr Adele McCormick from the University of Westminster takes the viewer through the relevant techniques which ensure that the activity works most effectively.

“Turn off the tap with a tissue to prevent cross contamination” she advises – then bin the tissue.

The challenge for someone who’s not attempted this before, is actually completing all the actions within the twenty seconds allocated. There’s a lot to do!
