“Only hand-washing will prevent spread of Norovirus” – ThinkNoro public health campaign

Norovirus - why everyone needs to wash their hands with soap and water

Why everyone needs a soap and water handwash…

As the weather grows colder, reported incidents of norovirus – sometimes referred to as “the winter vomiting bug” – are increasing dramatically across the UK. This has prompted a great deal of emphasis on controlling its spread by the use of regular and effective hand washing, in the form of the #thinknoro campaign, according to a recent report on the SomersetLive website.

The article by Yasmin Cooke quotes local GP and Clinical Chair at Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, Dr Jonathan Hayes, who emphasises that hand washing is the only viable option of curtailing the spread of the illness.

“There is no vaccine or immediate treatment for norovirus – prevention is the best form of defence. One of the best ways to protect against norovirus is by practicing good hygiene. This includes thorough hand washing with soap and warm water after using the toilet and before eating or preparing foods.”

The #ThinkNoro campaign

The article refers to the #ThinkNoro campaign, which is currently being given an exceptionally high profile across the country.

N “No visits to hospitals, care homes and GP surgeries if you are suffering from symptoms of Norovirus – send someone else to visit loved ones until you are better.”

O“Once you’ve been symptom-free for at least 48 hours , you’re safe to return to work, school or visit hospitals and care home.”

R“Regularly wash your hands with soap and warm water, especially after using the toilet, and before eating or preparing food.”

O “Only hand-washing will prevent spread of Norovirus –  alcohol hand gels DON’T kill the virus.”
