When you explore behind the playground hedgerows of the Abbey Catholic Primary School you enter their very own Forest that is used for either specific school activities or focused subject based learning. It’s an area that helps the holistic development of the children: playing and exploring, learning through perseverance, enjoyment and concentration as well as creative thinking.
It’s an initiative that they call Forest School, a woodland setting where the school can cater for the individual needs of the child, inspiring them to be confident life-long learners.
The groups learn bush craft skills such as fire lighting, cleaving wood, sawing timber and getting involved with the natural resources and the different vegetation.
By allowing children to freely choose their own activities, they can become engrossed in things that interest them and undertake a deep level of learning. They manage their own risks, so the school are equipping children with the tools needed to thrive in a challenging environment.

“We were planning an immersion morning in the school forest area and with the scheduled activities we needed the children to be able to wash their hands several times throughout the period.
“We didn’t want the children going back and forth to the school building to use the bathroom facilities, so we needed something close at hand.
