The “key to keeping you healthy”
Hand washing is important. Very important. Good old soap and water, when deployed effectively, can be the most effective weapon against a number of common – but very unpleasant – illnesses, according to a recent report on the Reader’s Digest website.
The article’s author Dawn Yanek also emphasises that the key is to wash your hands correctly and for a long enough time.
Ms. Janek quotes the Director of Epidemiology at Lenox Hill Hospital, Janet Haas, PhD, RN, who recognises that unclean hands that are used to prepare and then eat food will contaminate it. As an example, she cites that “…teaching people about handwashing can reduce diarrheal illnesses in immunocompromised people by up to 58 percent”.
The correct hand washing technique is also showcased:-
“Keep rubbing for 20 seconds, making sure to get soap between fingers and on the backs of hands—and don’t forget the thumbs!”
Controlling these illnesses with effective hand washing
“The following 14 illnesses are just a few of the ones that you can prevent with thorough handwashing” says the report.
- Hepatitis A
- E. coli
- The common cold
- Strep throat
- Pink eye
- Hand-foot-and-mouth disease
