“Urgent” global threat posed by drug-resistant superbugs
The UK government has announced a plan which intends to constrain antimicrobial resistance by the year 2040, according to a recent report on the BBC website.
The Health Secretary Matt Hancock has set a target of a reduction in:-
- the use of antibiotics in humans by 15% within the next five years
- the use of antibiotics in animals by 25% by next year (based on 2016 figures).
Not only will the government change the way they fund drug companies to develop new cures, they will also make “…increasing efforts to cut unnecessary use of the drugs.”
Mr Hancock will issue a stark warning at World Economic Forum, says the article.
“Antimicrobial resistance is as big a danger to humanity as climate change or warfare. That’s why we need an urgent global response.”
Why washing with soap and water is so important
“Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water” states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which also highlights the importance of effective hand hygiene in the battle against antibiotic resistance.
Their report Show Me the Science – Why Wash Your Hands? states
“Reducing the number of these infections by washing hands frequently helps prevent the overuse of antibiotics—the single most important factor leading to antibiotic resistance around the world.”
