Focus on hand washing in Indian hospitals
The call to action regarding the importance of basic but effective hand hygiene was recently issued by a paediatric doctor at ABG 17, according to a recent report on the Times of India website.
Dr Minhaj Sheikh was speaking at the event, which was jointly organised by the Nagpur chapters of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, the Paediatric Intensive Care Chapter – India and the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital.
Dr Sheikh highlighted that many Indian hospitals present a considerable threat to patients as the result of Hospital Acquired Infections, or HAIs. He is reported as saying that the risk of dying brought about by patients’ critical illnesses – and the increased cost of healthcare – is increased a great deal by these HAIs.
The importance of hand washing
The risk of HAIs can be considerably reduced with adherence to a tried and tested method, he pointed out.
“…most of such infections are avoidable by the most basic technique called hand-washing.”
Support for the ABG 17 event was also provided by Dr Satish Deopujari and Dr Mark Rogers, according to the report. They were also highly supportive of the hand washing message.
Dr Deopujari observed that infection treatment is becoming increasingly difficult, due to the fact that organisms that are present in a hospital environment are “highly resistant to drugs” when compared to those found elsewhere.
“A high dosage of antibiotics has to be administered to a patient who is already critically ill. Therefore, preventing these infections should be the primary agenda.”
