E. coli outbreak makes hand hygiene even more important

The latest outbreak of E. coli O157, which “appears to be associated with eating mixed salad leaves” is causing a level of concern – and current advice recognises the importance of effective hand washing, according to the latest bulletins on the Gov.uk website.

The regular updates from Public Health England (PHE) are emphasising the importance of EFFECTIVE hand hygiene – and the importance of ensuring that children wash their hands properly, whilst under supervision.

Washing with soap and water

PHE’s field epidemiology service director Dr Isabel Oliver advises that everyone should make hand hygiene a priority and considers it

…”vital to wash hands thoroughly using soap and water after using the toilet, before and after handling food and after contact with any animals and pets, including farm animals. Small children should also be supervised when washing their hands.”
