World Hand Hygiene Day 5 May 2023

Washing hands well at the right times is the key says the WHO

“Hand hygiene saves millions of lives every year when performed at the right moments during health care delivery” states the website for the World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Hand Hygiene Day which this year takes place on 5th May.

The event has a central theme annually – and this time round the message is a self-explanatory one:-

“Accelerate action together. SAVE LIVES – Clean Your Hands”

The benefits of effective hand hygiene are enormous, states the campaign. So much so that it reportedly saves “millions of lives every year when performed at the right moments during health care delivery” and is seen as a “sign of respect” to those requiring treatment, as well as providing protection for those that provide care.

The return on hand hygiene expenditure is a hugely favourable one, according to the WHO. “It is also a smart investment that offers exceptional return for each dollar invested.”

SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands

Each year the campaign enables the profile of effective hand washing to be raised across the globe. The WHO’s information page 5 May is World Hand Hygiene Day https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-hand-hygiene-day reveals the main focus of the world-wide activities.

“The central core of SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands is that all health-care workers should clean their hands at the right time and in the right way.”

A suite of materials and resources has been produced as a result of extensive research and testing, says the WHO – and they are a significant supporter when it comes to getting the hand washing message across.

“The tools aim to help the translation into practice of a multimodal strategy for improving and sustaining hand hygiene in health care.”

A facility has been provided for individuals and organisations to join the campaign.
