Large events with a considerable number of people present can be a challenge – particularly when it comes to providing suitable hand washing facilities. An outdoor festival, country show or sporting fixture can provide its own range of issues when it comes to providing suitable resources for the maintenance of effective hand hygiene.

“One of the most effective ways to encourage hand hygiene is to make it easy” states a recent article on the Hand-Cleaners website, which advocates that hand sanitisers that contain at least 60% alcohol should be located at “key locations” (wherever they’re needed in effect). They should be well maintained, topped up when nearly empty and easy to use.

Anyone running, for example, a festival should “Encourage Regular Hand Washing” says the article. Whereas gels are OK for a quick fix, they’re simply not up to the job, especially when hands are visibly soiled. Moreover, they’re largely ineffective against certain illnesses such as norovirus.

“While hand sanitiser is great for on-the-go use, nothing beats washing with soap and water when it comes to removing dirt and germs.”

In a Liverpool Echo article, which focused on the need for soap and water hand washing at festivals, the microbiologist Dr Joe Latimer was quoted.

“We don’t have to be super-sterile, but dare to venture to the toilet block? Wash your hands. About to sample the wonderful food on offer? Wash your hands. About to get creative with the festival makeup and glitter? Wash your hands.”
