Everyone must wash hands with soap and water after touching animals says HSE
The recent Health and Safety Executive (HSE) press release Health and safety regulator reminds farmers to keep visitors safe and healthy at open farm events addresses the importance of working farms that hold open days – and the huge benefits that visitors and farmers alike can gain from them. But, says the report, “it is crucial that farmers understand the health and safety measures they should take to keep visitors safe and well.”
An HSE inspector Wayne Owen is quoted in the release: “Open farm events provide a great opportunity for the public to learn more about farming, but it must be done safely.”
Hand hygiene is a highest priority
When it comes to ensuring a safe visit for everyone, says the HSE, effective hand hygiene is vitally important. Crucially and unequivocally, this involves washing hands with soap and clean running water. Gels and wipes are not suitable at all in such an environment they warn.
“Providing suitable facilities for washing hands (normally this will be hot and cold water, liquid soap and paper towels) and directing visitors to use them after petting animals, immediately before eating food, before and after using any play equipment, and before leaving site. Hand washing gels are not an acceptable substitute for washing facilities.”
As the HSE states, younger visitors to farm open days must, like everyone else, be able to wash their hands after touching animals, after visiting contaminated areas and particularly before eating.
But there are particular challenges when it comes to younger hand washers:-
- They need to be taught how to wash their hands well, when to wash and to wash for a suitable period of time.
- They need to be supervised, to ensure that they do wash properly.
- And, in a very important scenario that if often overlooked – they must have hand washing facilities that they can easily use.
Helping children to wash their hands effectively with soap and water
KiddiWash Xtra and KiddiSynk mobile sinks are designed especially for smaller hands, making hand washing educational and fun.
- They can be used safely indoors and out. They can be positioned where they’re most needed – right next to the animal petting attractions and eating areas for example. And on a farm visit, remember, only soap and water hand washing will do. Gels and wipes are NOT suitable.
- They’re designed for use by children. Both are perfect for smaller hands with the easy to use tap. The KiddiSynk is free standing and designed for a child’s height and the KiddiWash Xtra can be positioned on any convenient flat surface.
- They are perfect for teaching youngsters how to wash their hands properly – which is perhaps the most important lesson they will ever learn!
- The KiddiSynk and KiddiWash Xtra are a very practical hand washing sink solution. They’re robust, easy to use, easy to clean and easy to move around to anywhere that a good hand wash is needed!
- Hands are washed in clean, fresh water, which is kept separate from the used, dirty suds. In the case of the KiddiSynk, the removable water container has a separate area for dirty water. Separate water containers can be purchased, which makes a quick switch over when they need topping up a breeze! The KiddiWash Xtra stores dirty water in the bowl, which can be lifted out and easily emptied down any nearby drain.
